RELEASE DAY REVIEW – The Problem With Him by Rachel Higginson

Title – The Problem With Him
Author – Rachel Higginson
Publication Date – June 26, 2018
Series – Opposites Attract #3

I’m over men. I’m done with them.

Or at least the ones that work in my kitchen. Fine, one man in particular. Wyatt Shaw is cocky and condescending and so far out of his element that he doesn’t know which way is up. Or how to run his brand new kitchen all by himself.

That’s where I come in. Sous chef extraordinaire. Second in command. Bane of his existence. I am the reason Wyatt’s doing so well as the new executive chef of one of our city’s most prestigious restaurants. He has me to thank for his glowing accolades and five-star write-ups. Only if you were to ask him, he’d say I’m his biggest problem.

Despite his discouragement and bullish behavior, I’ve set two goals for myself.

The first? I’m going to fight my way to the top of this male-dominated industry and claim my own award-winning kitchen.

The second? I’m going to do whatever it takes to ignore Wyatt and his rare smiles and the thickening tension that’s started to simmer between us.

Wyatt Shaw might be Durham’s new shining star. He might be up for a James Beard Award. He might be my new boss and key to my future success, but he’s also in my way.

So he can keep his smoldering looks and secret kisses. And he can be the one that figures out how to make it through service without getting distracted by me.

I’m not the problem. The problem is him.

Mark my words – nobody can write a slow burn romance quite like Rachel Higginson can! I’ve just finished The Problem With Him, and I swear that there wasn’t a moment where I didn’t have butterflies in my stomach fluttering at all the amusing antics. Wyatt and Kaya had palpable tension that could be felt with each carefully chosen word and interaction that occurred between these two. There was a simmering that occurred throughout this interconnected standalone that left me unable to put it down. I craved more the deeper I fell for these two characters. Furthermore, while these two so obviously had something special together, there was something about Kaya and her perseverance that resonated deep in my soul. She was fighting for what she wanted and would stop at nothing to get it, no matter what it would cost her. I admired her tenacity and guts to keep pushing in a man’s world and left me instantly rooting for her. I will say that I wish we could have gotten some chapters from Wyatt’s point of view, but for purely selfish reasons. I would kill to know what was going through his head in particular key moments where he was face to face with Kaya. This series of standalones has got to be one of my favorite that is out there right now. Each book’s writing and plot is flawless in its delivery with characters that have you rooting for them from the very start. The enemies to lovers feel just makes it that much sweeter. I’ll be sad to see this series wrap up, but I just adore getting glimpses into each couple as it progresses. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the release of Dillon’s book next!

RELEASE DAY REVIEW – The Difference Between Us by Rachel Higginson

Title – The Difference Between Us
Author – Rachel Higginson
Publication Date – July 25, 2017
Series – Opposites Attract #2

I’m cursed.

At least when it comes to finding Mr. Right.

I’m tired of men that only want one night stands or blind dates that are nothing but awkward and uncomfortable. I’m tired of avoiding inappropriate text messages and the constant disappointment of always meeting Mr. Wrong.

After all these years of dates that lead nowhere, I can admit that it’s me. I’m the problem. I’m shy and picky and cursed. Definitely cursed.

So I’ve decided two things.

The first? I’m giving up dating and relationships and men in general. Maybe, possibly, forever.

The second? I’m going to have to try harder to avoid Ezra Baptiste.

If I couldn’t hack it in the kiddy pool of dating, I certainly can’t swim in his deep end. He’s too successful. Too intense. He’s all man when I’m used to nothing but boys pretending to be grownups. He’s everything I’m afraid to want and so far out of my league we might as well be different species entirely.

So he’ll need to find a different artist to paint his mural. And a different graphic designer to help him with his website. He’ll need to find someone else to glare at and flirt with and kiss.

It can’t be me.

We’re too different.

Rachel Higginson dazzles once again with the release of The Difference Between Us! The second book in the Opposites Attract series is filled with that delicious slow burn in your stomach, the kind where you’re waiting for the explosion of tingles to come and boy does it deliver. Ezra and Molly’s relationship is angsty in an untraditional sense, filled with a back and forth banter that is bound to keep readers on their toes. I don’t think the grin was wiped from my face the entire time, and that certainly makes for an awesome read!

“And hating him didn’t feel safe anymore either. In fact none of the emotions I felt for Ezra felt safe. But they didn’t necessarily feel wrong either.”

I saw pieces of the girl I used to be whenever I read Molly’s inner thoughts, and I think that’s what likened me to her so much. She was so unsure of any relationship, given that her family was dysfunctional and didn’t provide the best example. However, it turned out her biggest obstacle was her own mind. I really loved the uncertainty surrounding Ezra. We saw him through Molly’s eyes the entire time, so his personality was always colored with the vibe that she got from him, rather than his feelings and emotions. He would make comments that seemed like flirting, but with Molly’s bias, it was difficult to know for sure. Honestly, it was my favorite part of the entire novel. I’m normally a fan of the double point of view so I can tell what both the hero and heroine are thinking, but I could not image The Difference Between Us being written any other way. Higginson hit the nail on the head, providing just enough intrigue and fun-filled banter to keep readers smiling and wondering just when the fireworks would happen.

“I had spent twenty-seven years of my life blending in. But I wasn’t invisible with Ezra. He saw me. And I was enough for him.”

I wish that the end of the novel didn’t wrap up quite so abruptly, but I enjoyed the story nonetheless. I think that readers will find themselves aching for more from not only our main hero and heroine, but the secondary characters as well. The writing is memorizing, the storyline is fantastic, and I promise that you’ll be finding anything but the difference between you and these characters. I may have just finished, but I’m already dying to dive back in for a reread!

RELEASE DAY REVIEW – The Opposite of You by Rachel Higginson

Title – The Opposite of You
Author – Rachel Higginson
Publication Date – March 30, 2017
Series – Opposites Attract #1

I’ve sworn off men.

All men.

Famous last words, right? You’re expecting some epic tale of reluctant love and my dramatic change of heart? Well, you’re not going to get it.

I’m stubborn. And headstrong. And I’ve just survived the worst three years of my life. After escaping an abusive fiancé to live in hostels and cheap hotels while I worked my way across Europe, I’ve come to two conclusions.

The first? Now that I’m back home, I’m going to squander my expensive culinary degree on a food truck that caters to the late night drunk crowd.

The second? I’m going to prove to the bastard across the plaza that my street food is better than his fussy five course monstrosities.

Killian Quinn might be Food and Wine’s Chef to Watch Out For. He might have a Michelin Star. He might have every food critic in the city wrapped around his too-large fingers. But he’s also pretentious and unbearably arrogant and the very opposite of me.

So he can keep his unsolicited advice and his late night visits and his cocky smiles. I want none of it. Or him.

I want the opposite.

Every once in a while, I’m lucky enough to stumble upon a book that transports me to a whole new world with characters that make me grin and fall head over heels in love. Rachel Higginson’s The Opposite of You did just that and easily shot up to one of my favorite reads of the year. This first in a new series of standalones is a breath of fresh air in the romance genre. With personalities who may love to hate each other, readers will do nothing but love and adore them and their romance.

“I’d already dated the egomaniac. I’d already had a relationship with the famous executive chef. I’d already given up my dreams so someone else could pursue theirs. And I’d lost everything in the process. I didn’t want a guy like Killian Quinn. I wanted the exact opposite.”

From the moment I met Vera, there was something I was drawn to and couldn’t get enough of. There were morsels of a past she worked hard and fought to overcome, which I’ll admit is one of my soft spots in novels. However, she still had this vulnerable side to her that I could tell was broken in unfathomable ways. I needed to know what would happen to her and see how much of a transformation she could make. The novel is written entirely in her point of view so to say that I became incredibly invested in her would be an understatement. However, that is not to say that I didn’t sustain myself on every bit of crumb I could receive from Killian as well. He had one of those personalities that was honest and explosive, but commanded respect even through the words on a page. The reverence people had for him was completely understood and I think it’s what made me initially warm up to him. Him and Vera were so different, yet so similar, that I was able to see how good they would be for each other. They could easily fit together and complement the other and let me just tell you, Higginson excels at doing just that! The slow burn of their romance warmed all of my insides and left me beyond satisfied.

“This man that had gone from idol to enemy, to reluctant friend, to fantastic kisser. And not only had he kissed me beyond all reason and rational thought, but he’d given me back whole chunks of myself that had been missing.”

In a romance genre filled with so many occupations, it was so refreshing to see both a male and female chef striving to achieve their dreams. While that may have been my initial reason for wanting to read this novel, it was the insane chemistry and unforgettable characters that kept the pages turning. I read The Opposite of You in less than 24 hours and it was one of those situations where I couldn’t put it down, yet I never wanted it to end. The Opposite of You was my first book by Rachel Higginson but if it’s an indicator of what she’s capable of, I can guarantee that I’ll be diving into anything and everything she writes. If there were more than five stars, this author would certainly be receiving them from me for this incredible romance!
